Kimi Antonelli arrived at Silverstone riding a wave of momentum. The young Mercedes driver has enjoyed a remarkable 2026 season so far, claiming five Grand Prix victories in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, and Monaco, firmly establishing himself as one of the championship favourites.
The British Grand Prix weekend began in much the same fashion. Antonelli delivered another impressive performance in the Sprint Race to take victory before being presented with the Pirelli Pole Position Award by Nigerian international goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.

For much of Sunday’s race, it looked as though Antonelli was once again in contention for a podium finish, if not victory. Running near the front and keeping the leaders honest, the Italian appeared set to add another strong result to his growing résumé.
Unfortunately, his race unravelled in the closing stages. An unusual front wheel shield failure severely affected the balance of his Mercedes, forcing him into a series of frustrating pit stops as the team attempted to rectify the problem. What had looked like a promising afternoon quickly turned into damage limitation, with Antonelli eventually crossing the line in 16th place.
Waiting for him after the race was his father, Marco, who offered support and encouragement following a disappointing end to an otherwise impressive weekend. It was a reminder that in Formula One, anything can happen.

While Silverstone didn’t deliver the result he had hoped for, there is little reason for Antonelli to dwell on the disappointment. Thanks to his outstanding form earlier in the season, he remains at the top of the Drivers’ Championship on 179 points, with Mercedes teammate George Russell second on 154.
