Kym Illman Newsletter – December

What’s Kym been up to?

It’s finally finished… After a very long 22 race season, 2023 has come to a close in Abu Dhabi.

Before we delve into what Kym has in store until F1 resumes in Bahrain next year, let’s rewind and catch up on what he’s been up to over the past 2 months!

To kick off October, Kym treated his family to an amazing holiday in Las Vegas. They all had a great time and Kym even hit Omnia nightclub with his sons and their partners!

Post-Vegas the family headed back to Perth whilst Kym embarked on the first leg of the Americas triple-header in Austin. Three intense weeks of travel and F1 excitement took Kym through Austin, Mexico, and Brazil, capturing incredible shots like the one of Sergio Perez’s crash in Mexico. You can grab this shot and some of Kym’s other best works here!

After Mexico, Kym set off for Brazil where he captured his favourite shot of the 2023 F1 season – the Brazil race finish with Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez. This event was nothing short of spectacular, with Kym being in exactly the right spot on the pitwall and Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez finishing just 0.053 seconds apart at the line on the final lap. Kym offered his image as a signed print run with Fernando, and it sold out in just a few hours, although you can still buy this as an unsigned print!

He also personally delivered copies to Sergio Perez and Fernando and encouraged them to write a note to the other driver – which they were both quite touched by.

Post-triple header, Kym headed back to Vegas to meet back up with Tonya for a brief working holiday at the best hotel room Kym has had all year – the presidential suite at Caesars Palace!

In the lead up to the 2023 Vegas GP, Kym recorded a series of YouTube videos, giving fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the track’s progress and sharing insights into the first ever Las Vegas GP, and giving Kym’s YouTube channel some of its best performance stats to date!

The inaugural Las Vegas GP had a chaotic start with Carlos Sainz colliding with a drain cover, halting Friday’s events. With Kym on the ground and the team back in Perth we managed to provide some amazing up to date coverage for you that was very well received, although the incident itself did attract some negativity about the Vegas track itself. However, come race day all was forgiven with a fantastic race and a paddock packed with celebrities like Shaquille O’Neal, Brad Pitt, Usain Bolt, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Kylie Minogue, and many more. Overall, Kym had a blast in Vegas and looks forward to next year’s race when they’ve ironed out all the kinks.

After Vegas, it was off to Abu Dhabi for the season finale – and what a finale it was!

Kym also stuck around in Abu Dhabi for post-season testing where he saw the likes of Jack Doohan, Pato O’Ward, Theo Pourchaire, and Ayumu Iwasa in the car for their respective teams.

Now that the season has come to a close, Kym has also finalised his Best of 2023 Photobook! This photobook contains a collection of images taken over the course of the 2023 F1 season showcasing all the highs, lows, and emotional moments over the racing year.

So what is Kym doing over the break? You’d be forgiven for thinking that Kym would be heading straight home for some well-earned rest, but no, he’s straight off to Kenya to join his family on holiday. Then he’ll be back in Lancelin, Western Australia for Christmas, where he’ll be putting together some more F1 and travel related videos for you. Because let’s face it, Kym isn’t the sort of person who likes to slow down!

Kym also has one additional family holiday planned before the 2024 F1 season commences, and he is looking forward to taking everyone to Niseko Ski Resort in Sapporo, Japan.

As Kym photographs the wildlife in Kenya, he wants to express his gratitude to you for being a part of his journey this year and to acknowledge his amazing behind the scenes team back in Perth who work tirelessly to get videos and images to you.

And as always, STAY PASSIONATE!
