TODAY’S TOP THREE

Max Verstappen stood on the top step of the podium today, joined by Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton, who started on the front row alongside the Dutchman when the lights went out. Only Kimi has more podium finishes than Max this season, despite this being his first victory of the year, showing impressive consistency in what has been a challenging season.

CHAMPION DRIVE

Lewis Hamilton completed a champion’s drive to finish on the podium today. On Lap 10, things were looking bleak for the seven-time World Champion. He was down in P18 and a minute behind the pack. However, Ferrari worked brilliantly on the pit stops, allowing Lewis to fight his way back up to P4. The late Safety Car restart gave Lewis the opportunity he needed to get around Isack Hadjar and claim the final podium place.

A remarkable recovery.

Arvid Lindblad’s new power unit cost him this weekend, forcing him to start the race from the back of the grid. The rookie didn’t let that deter him, battling through the tricky conditions to fight his way through the field and finish in the points.

It was a good day all round for VCARB, with Liam Lawson making an impressive start to the race and helping the team secure a double points finish.

MAX IS BACK

It’s been 15 races since Max Verstappen last stood on the top step of the podium, but he’s back on top here in Sepang. It’s a fitting place to end that drought, having secured his second career victory at this circuit when Formula One last raced here. Today, he claimed career win number 72. This one clearly meant a lot to the Dutchman, who celebrated with the team in parc ferme.

HEARTBREAK CONTINUES

After victory in Baku, it appeared George Russell’s bad fortune had finally run its course. But those highs didn’t last long, as he was forced to pull over with a PU issue during the latter stages of the race. The gap to Kimi Antonelli now stands at 84 points, making the championship challenge an almost impossible task for George. When asked about the issues in the media pen afterwards, he was almost lost for words, summing up the experience with: “You’ve almost got to laugh.”

A STRONG RETURN

When George Russell was forced to retire with PU issues, Isack Hadjar looked to be on course for a podium finish. After qualifying P3 yesterday but starting from P8 due to a grid penalty, it was shaping up to be another strong day for the Red Bull driver. In the end, he had to settle for P5, but a fifth and a third in his first two races back from a wrist injury is certainly nothing to be sniffed at.

Lewis Hamilton spent a goodly long time in the Media Pen after his "best lap of the year" at the Sepang International Circuit, which put him on the front row alongside Max Verstappen, the first time they have been together since Abu Dhabi 2021.

Before speaking to Sky Sports' Craig Slater, he remarked on being the last driver in the pen, stating he's been "talking too much." He went on to say that he was happier and was proud of his team for a great performance.

Can he secure win number two of the season today? We will find out when the lights go out at 3 PM for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

Many race fans attending the Bahrain GP in Malaysia have discovered they are not permitted to bring in plastic bottles of water or fluid of any type. This has resulted in track entry points littered with bottles as staff confiscate them.

However, I asked the press office what the solution is given the extremely warm weather here and was advised that it was just plastic bottles not allowed, Regular flasks are OK.

If you've brought one in today could you confirm that is the case in the comments please?

NOT COOL

George Russell will have to endure high temperatures at the Bahrain GP, as he won't have a cooling vest because of the cost cap.

According to George, the Mercedes team said: "We can put the money towards it, but at a cost when we are trying to develop the car within the budget cap."

He thinks the development of the cooling vest should sit outside the cost cap.

"When it works, it works great," he said.

"The FIA should step in and allow us to develop it outside the budget cap."

The race in Sepang has been declared a heat hazard, and it is expected that temperatures within the cockpit could reach 60C.

DEEP MENTAL PREPARATION

During the first FIA Press Conference with Max Verstappen, Nico Hulkenberg, and Oliver Bearman, the drivers were asked if they had done any extra training ahead of Malaysia and Singapore, where they will be driving three races within a week in the extremely hot conditions.

Nico Hulkenberg mentioned that the schedule didn't allow much preparation for himself, and that the next two Grands Prix will be "physical but manageable."

Max Verstappen had a more astute answer: "I think I had four or five months of very intense preparation," he said.

"Deep mental preparation of not giving an F.

"You just need to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. So that’s the case for everyone. It’s hot, sweaty, need a few more underwears, I guess."
