Trackside Happenings

A safety car finish at Silverstone.

The 2026 British Grand Prix came to a somewhat anticlimactic conclusion after a late Safety Car was deployed following an incident in the closing stages of the race. With only a few laps remaining, Race Control determined there was insufficient time to safely clear the track and resume racing under green-flag conditions, meaning the field took the chequered flag behind the Safety Car.

It wasn’t the finish many fans had been hoping for. After an entertaining race filled with strategy, overtaking, and plenty of action, spectators were denied what could have been a thrilling final sprint to the finish. With several drivers still fighting for position, there was every chance the closing laps could have produced one last dramatic twist.

However, Safety Cars are deployed for one reason above all else: to protect the drivers, marshals, and recovery crews working on or near the circuit. While finishing under the Safety Car is never the preferred outcome for fans or competitors, Race Control will always prioritise safety over spectacle.

Despite the subdued ending, it shouldn’t overshadow what had been an excellent British Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc produced a superb drive to secure his first victory in 624 days, George Russell delighted the home crowd with second place, and Lewis Hamilton completed the podium to give Ferrari a double podium finish.

Although the final laps lacked the wheel-to-wheel battle many had anticipated, the 2026 British Grand Prix still delivered memorable moments for the Silverstone books.
