Andrea Kimi Antonelli has won his first World Championship, becoming the youngest-ever champion at just 20 years and 68 days old, after a third-place finish at the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Antonelli was joined on the podium by Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, with the trio representing three different generations of champions, a combined 12 titles between them.

The championship win comes after an impressive turn of form this season, with many doubting the decision to promote him to an F1 seat last year after a difficult rookie season.

Italy’s first champion since the 1950s was in tears after crossing the line, with the achievement shared with his family, who met him in parc ferme.

He will take to the track as champion in Brazil, the home of his idol Ayrton Senna, whose number he chose to race under and will continue with next season despite the #1 being available.
