Formula 1 will make a surprise return to Malaysia in 2026 after announcing that the Bahrain Grand Prix will be held at the Sepang International Circuit.
The race, scheduled for October 2-4, will take place between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix and will officially be known as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
The agreement was reached between Formula 1, the FIA, and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia to ensure Bahrain’s race remains on the calendar despite ongoing regional challenges. While the venue changes, the rest of the 2026 Formula 1 schedule remains unchanged.
For many fans, the announcement marks the return of one of Formula 1’s most popular circuits.
Sepang hosted Formula 1 from 1999 until 2017 and earned a reputation for producing thrilling races, unpredictable weather, and some of the most demanding conditions on the calendar. Its wide layout and multiple overtaking opportunities often delivered exciting wheel-to-wheel battles, while the tropical climate regularly threw strategy into chaos.
The last Formula 1 race at Sepang was won by Max Verstappen in 2017, before Malaysia dropped off the calendar the following season.
Formula 1 President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali, welcomed the return of the circuit, describing it as “a great venue” that holds a special place in the sport’s history.
“We are delighted to confirm that Malaysia will host the Bahrain Grand Prix in 2026,” Domenicali said.
“Malaysia is an incredible country, and Sepang holds a special place in Formula 1 history. It will provide a spectacular setting for racing and an unforgettable experience for fans at the circuit and watching around the world.”
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem also praised the collaboration between all parties involved, saying the agreement highlighted Formula 1’s ability to adapt while ensuring a full championship calendar.
For fans across Southeast Asia, the return of Formula 1 to Sepang is particularly significant. The circuit has long been one of the region’s premier motorsport venues, attracting passionate crowds throughout its previous stint on the calendar.
