The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix got off to a dramatic start. Heavy rain before lights out left the circuit slippery, and it wasn’t long before the race was red flagged following a heavy crash for home favourite Max Verstappen.
Starting from seventh, Verstappen’s race ended at the high-speed final corner after he lost control. The Red Bull hit the wall heavily, bringing his afternoon to an abrupt end and leaving the packed Zandvoort crowd stunned. Thankfully, Verstappen was able to climb out of the car and walk away unharmed.
Speaking after the race, he explained that the conditions had simply caught him out. “It looked like it was dry in that spot, so I tried to accelerate and it just caught me out.”
The disappointment was made even greater by the significance of the weekend. With this marking the final Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, Verstappen had hoped to give his home fans one last memorable result. Instead, he was left reflecting on the support he has received there over the years.
“I have mixed emotions as it was positive seeing so many fans here for one final time but obviously a huge shame and quite disappointing to not finish the race.”
Despite the early exit, Verstappen was quick to acknowledge the many positive memories he has built at Zandvoort, thanking the Dutch fans for the incredible support they’ve shown throughout Formula 1’s return to the circuit.
