The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps has hosted an F1 GP race every year since 1985 with the exception of 2003 and 2006.
It is famous/infamous for two corners in particular, Eau Rouge and Radillon. Cars take these two corners flat out as they ascend a steep climb. This section of track has seen a number of deaths and in 2022 it is being re-modelled to make it safer.
The circuit is about 20 minutes from the small town of Spa and good quality hotel accommodation is hard to find in grand prix times as the teams get first crack at them.
There is a lively social scene along the main road that leads to the track about 100m from the Hotel De La Source. Many choose to kick on there at the end of the day and wait for the traffic to clear.
Many of the drivers stay at the Hotel De La Source, which is a mere 150metres from the first corner although room rates are right up there with Monaco but you’re almost staying on the track.
There are a number of smaller, family run hotels in the region and the city of Liege is about 50kms away but be aware that the traffic into and out of the track is often heavy on the weekend.
Spa also features the only paddock that’s on two levels. I like this track and can’t wait to see what the remodelled track looks like.
The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is the longest of the 23 F1 tracks this year. It clocks in at 7.004 km and winds through some stunning forest but being such a long track, you’ll only see the cars pass you 44 times during the race.
