About

Audi’s Formula One project is built on the long-standing foundation of the Sauber team, which has been a regular presence on the grid since 1993. Over the years, the Hinwil-based outfit earned a reputation for technical efficiency and driver development, playing a key role in the early Formula One careers of drivers such as Kimi Räikkönen and Felipe Massa. While outright success was limited, a partnership with BMW in the mid-2000s delivered the team’s only Formula One race victory, with much of its history spent competing in the tightly contested midfield.

Between 2018 and 2023, the team competed under the Alfa Romeo name before transitioning back to the Sauber identity with Stake sponsorship in 2024. This period marked the beginning of a broader transformation, as Audi confirmed its intention to enter Formula One as a full works manufacturer.

In 2025, driver Nico Hulkenberg had a personal breakthrough, when he finally secured the first podium finish of his Formula One career, ending the record for the most race starts without a podium. The milestone cemented his reputation as one of the sport’s most resilient competitors and a fan favourite.

Ahead of the 2026 season, the team was officially rebranded as Audi, signalling a major new chapter backed by significant factory investment and long-term ambition.

Audi’s driver line-up for 2026 reflects a balance of experience and youth. The team confirmed German veteran Nico Hulkenberg alongside Brazilian talent Gabriel Bortoleto, pairing proven racecraft with emerging potential as the manufacturer prepares for its Formula One debut.
